Since 2022, OpenOpcUa has been distributed as a freeware. At the request of its major industrial customers, the project has moved away from its previous Open Source model. It is important to note that “open” does not mean “free”, and the two concepts must not be confused. OpenOpcUa — literally “Open Source for OPC UA” — was originally launched in 2009 as an initiative sponsored by a consortium of international companies led by Michel Condemine (4CE Industry). The consortium pursued several objectives:
- Create a professionnal quality codebase implementing OpcUa concept
- Help users understand OpcUa technology
- OpenOpcUaCoreServer was the first
Certified Open Source OPC UA Server.
